This program is oriented toward those seeking accredited courses in their graduate studies. The sponsoring university contacts JCBT to organize the group, determines the study program, and pays expenses. The emphasis, of course, is on the land, history, and life in Israel — the context of the Bible — and how it improves our understanding of the message of Scripture.
This program was initiated in 2006 for the graduate students of Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology (NEGST), now a division of the Africa International University, Nairobi, Kenya.
One of our former translation students was enrolled in this program and suggested the cooperative arrangement. The experience was so well-received that the University has made this month-long study a requirement of their four-year doctorate of theology degree.
In 2011, another group of candidates came to Israel. As in 2006, the one month course on the history, geography and cultural backgrounds of the Land of the Bible for the doctoral candidates was an eye-opening experience highly appreciated by the participants and the leadership. Participants were roughly split on obtaining a degree in theology or Bible translation.
We challenge other universities to consider this experience as a MUST for their students as well.
